It can be overwhelming searching for an effective credit lawyer to help fix credit. In this article, we’re going over: what you should look for, what a credit attorney can actually do for you, the average cost and time, and much more.
The biggest benefit professional credit repair agencies will provide you, is a hands-off and headache free, credit repair process. In addition, having legal representation should make your road to rebuild credit much smoother, and more efficient than doing it yourself.
What is legal
There are two primary tools effective credit lawyers will use on your behalf. This includes the credit report dispute process, and debt validation. There are some additional tools at their disposal but under most cases these two tools alone, will perform the job.
The first step required of you, is to forward all three of your credit reports to the credit repair law firm. You will also need to indicate what items you want removed from your credit reports.
The credit lawyers will often begin by disputing the credit bureaus using a credit report dispute letter. This dispute must be filed with each of the three major credit bureaus, and you may have to file multiple disputes, if you’re removing multiple listings on your credit reports.
The other tool is debt validation and this will often be used with debt in collections. Before, you ever acknowledge, negotiate, or pay collection agency or debt collector, you first should request validation of your debt.
This is how you say prove it to me. It will require the collection agency to give you legal evidence that you are the legal and current owners of your account. If they cannot validate your account, then you are no longer legally responsible for repayment.
You as a consumer, can use both these tools on your own behalf, please do use some caution because often collection agencies and it may shock you to hear, but even the credit bureaus don’t always follow federal rules and regulations.
Credit repair laws
Did you know there is a federal law that governs and regulates what credit repair services can do to fix your credit? The Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) is a law that does just this.
Every legitimate credit repair attorney will prominently inform you, that they have been and are compliant with this federal law. It is legal for credit repair agencies to work under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) this is what protects your right to dispute and remove inaccurate information from all three of your credit reports.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is what gives you the right to dispute debt accounts with collection agencies. These laws do provide you with more protections, but these are the big purposes and common uses. The laws have been passed, to protect you the citizen.
How long and how much?
Generally speaking, you can expect to use a credit repair company for six to 12 months with an average expense in the range of $100 to $150 per month. The exact amount of time you will need professional credit help, will depend on the exact nature of the work your credit file demands. Everyone has a unique situation.
You should look for a refund policy. However, avoid any service making any guarantees, this is a big red flag. You should also avoid paying an hourly fee because frequently a paralegal will do all the work on your case, which is one of the reasons why you can pay a lower expense.
On a side note, you will likely have to pay a first work fee of less than $200. As a grand total you shouldn’t expect to pay more than a few hundred dollars over a few months to improve your credit score.
This is a much cheaper alternative than living with bad credit. The embarrassment, the expense, and potentially not being able to find better employment, because of negative marks on your credit report, can be a frustrating, dead end road.
Look, your credit score is exactly like your Grade Point Average (GPA) in school days gone past. If you’re acing all your classes, but failing gym class, that’s going to destroy your overall GPA. This same exact principle applies to your credit score.
